What is an Exercise Physiologist?

When we see a new patient we often ask them “have you ever heard of an exercise physiologist before?” to which they most often answer “no”. Then we ask “do you have any idea what we do?” and mostly they really don’t know.

Exercise Physiology is a relatively unknown profession compared to more commonly known allied health professionals. One of the easiest ways to explain what we do is to say that we use exercise as medicine. That is, we use exercise to treat and manage chronic (long term) diseases and injuries. We are Allied Health Professionals with four years of university training. Some of the things you might see an exercise physiologist for include(but not limited to):

  • persisting pain caused by injury or overuse

  • to improve your heart health

  • rehabilitation following an injury

  • to control your diabetes

  • to prevent pre-diabetes from progressing to full diabetes

  • to improve your recovery following cancer treatment

  • improve balance following a fall or near fall

  • to improve your general health and wellbeing
